Elderly Home Care Agency, Neighborly Home Care, Assists with the Support of Loved Ones Living with Debilitating Conditions
As we grow older, we often find that we need extra assistance for tasks and activities that were once easy for us. This is not an easy change to experience, which is why it is important for family members to be mindful of these changes in their older relatives in order to make the adjustment easier.
However, it can often be hard to put yourself in the shoes of someone who has dementia or another debilitating disease. As a result, families who do not fully understand or know how to deal with the mental conditions that develop in seniors due to old age may often find themselves feeling impatient and frustrated.
That is why psychologist, P.K. Neville created a virtual dementia tour in 2002 with the belief that if everyone understands the reality of this debilitating condition; it can only help the person receiving care.
To get a better idea of what seniors with dementia experience, participants are fashioned with glasses that simulate macular degeneration, insoles with sharp ridges, loose knit gloves, and headphones that blast noise, then sent into a furnished room where they are asked to complete 5 everyday tasks within the course of 10 minutes. Results have shown that, on average, participants were able to complete 1.6 tasks.
The purpose of the virtual dementia tour was for family members to become more empathetic of their loved ones’ conditions by experiencing what they do on a regular basis. Setting expectations is an important part of significant lifestyle changes – like welcoming a caregiver into your home to provide assistance to your loved one.
At Neighborly Home Care, an elderly home care agency, our caregivers are trained and have experience assisting seniors living with dementia. The importance of having an experienced caregiver is crucial in successfully handling situations with seniors with dementia. Less experienced caregivers could find these situations frustrating and challenging.
