Incorporated in 1798, Upper Darby boasts a rich history dating back to early settlements in Pennsylvania. It played essential roles in both the colonial era and the Revolutionary War, with artifacts and landmarks still visible today.
The history of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, is extensive and multifaceted, with origins tracing back to long before its incorporation in 1798. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape tribe of Native Americans. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1653 from New Sweden, and the area eventually came under English control in 1664, being included in a large land grant to William Penn in 1681. Upon the founding of the colony of Pennsylvania, the area became part of Darby Township in Chester County, which later formed part of Delaware County in 1789.
One notable historical site in Upper Darby is the Lower Swedish Cabin, built around 1654 and considered a remnant of the early Swedish settlers who introduced the log cabin to the area. The township was also active in the antislavery movement, with many homes serving as stops on the Underground Railroad.
The 19th century brought significant industrialization to Upper Darby, which led to a population increase and the development of various industries, including mills, rock quarries, factories, and other industrial concerns. This industrial growth attracted a wave of European immigrants and numerous churches were founded. Upper Darby also played a role in the Civil War, contributing two regiments, including the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, which participated in key battles such as Antietam and Gettysburg.
Today, Upper Darby is a suburban community that retains significant historical landmarks, reflecting its rich past while embracing modern development.
Some of the area’s landmarks include the Tower Theater, a historic music venue that has hosted numerous iconic performers throughout the years, and Collen Brook Farm. This farm is a 19th-century historical farmhouse and barn. The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and now functions as a museum.
